Pizzeria Near Wychwood FAQs
As a local Pizzeria Near Wychwood, we are proud to share with Torontonians the rich pizzeria traditions which originated in Naples under the rule of the Bourbon kings at the end of the 18th century. During this time, Naples was a thriving European city, home to the poor working-class known as the Lazzaroni, named this way because they resembled the man resurrected by Jesus.
This thriving working-class required inexpensive food which to consume quickly. Pizza—a flatbread with various toppings, eaten for any meal and sold by street vendors —met this need. They featured the delicious garnishes beloved today, such as tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies and garlic.
However, it was not until 1889, under the rule of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, that this legendary food would gain national recognition. Queen Marguerita, bored of the steady diet of French cuisine, asked for an assortment of pizzas from the city’s Pizzeria Brandi. However, the queen enjoyed most a variation with mozzarella, soft white cheese, red tomatoes and green basil, dubbed the Margherita. With Queen Margherita’s blessing, the pizza spread beyond Naples’ borders.
Where was the first Pizzeria in North America?
It was not until 1905 that the first pizzeria in North America, Lombardi's in Manhattan, was licensed. Lombardi’s remains open today and still employs the same original pizza oven.
